Theatre Maker/ Butoh Performer/ Physical Theatre Performer/ Actor
I have been making my own work for over 20 years, focussing on creating pieces that are immersive in nature, combining video projections, sound scapes, recorded voices, live art, movement, themes of a taboo or difficult nature and text. I have toured my work nationally and internationally, in Europe, North America and East Asia.
My last solo piece ‘Unspeakable, Unspoken - Transformations into Motherhood’ was supported by the Arts Council of England and the NHS and was elected for the Mayor International Symposium Oxytocin: Birthing the World in 2017 at the Royal College of Arts. https://youtu.be/h9N17JCaxxg
FringeReview: "Hidden Gem" "This is...outstanding devised theatre…" "It could hardly be bettered, and is unique in its ambition, scope, heartbreak and affirmation.”
I am in gestation for a new piece, called ‘We Need To Talk About Death”. We presented a 18 minute extract of it at The Works at Brighton Dome and at Sick! Festival Manchester.
My Butoh practice has arisen from the need to find a physical language for my current piece in development, and has shown itself to have a life of its own. Working with the upworldfx, Hi3 Network, Maidstone Studios, and Canterbury and London South Bank Universities I am developing .butoh//eXr, a performance piece investigating the great mass extinction by combining Butoh with digital art, AR, VR and LED screens. We are currently looking for partners to bring this exciting piece to a wider audience.
Also in the Butoh world, I am in research and production of ‘Luminous Ashes’, a movement based duet with Conan Amok and the Dance Base Yokohama (DaBY), bringing together Conan’s Butoh and my Contact Improvisation languages. We have already presented work in progress in Yokohama, and a version of the final piece in Tokyo and will present the research findings in performance in March 2025.
As a physical theatre performer I especially love productions that integrate movement practices such as improvisation, contact improvisation, slap stick, acrobatics and mime and have worked with All Greek To Me Theatre Company since its beginnings both as performer and movement director.
During the covid lock downs, I developed the improvised performance ‘Dialogue Without Words’ - a conversation between me, another performer and a musician, using sound, silence, movement and drawing as ways to communicate, listen and respond to each other. It has been performed online, in Brighton, Miaoli and now monthly in Tokyo. Please come and see this beautiful piece when you have the opportunity.
Lastly, I work as a free lance actor for theatre film and television. I am seeking representation, both in East Asia and in Europe.
